If you’re planning a short trip to the stunning Bocas del Toro, you can explore its enchanting islands and mainland highlights in three days.

Dedicate a day each to Isla Colón and Isla Bastimentos, with a day trip to the mainland in between.

Day 1: Isla Colón

Starfish Beach

Starfish Beach is one of the must-visit attractions on Isla Colón. Start your day by grabbing breakfast in Bocas Town, then take a bus to Boca del Drago at the western edge of Plaza Bolívar.

From Boca del Drago, a scenic 15-minute walk through coconut palm groves leads to Starfish Beach. Arrive early to avoid crowds, or stroll further down the beach to quieter spots. The beach is named for its abundance of large, colorful starfish in the shallow waters. Observe them carefully while wading or snorkeling, but avoid touching or removing them from the water to preserve their well-being.

Afterward, head back to Boca del Drago to catch a bus to Bocas Town.

Caving at La Gruta

For an adventurous twist, stop midway across the island near Colonia Santeña to explore La Gruta cave. Pay a small entrance fee and rent gumboots and headlamps from the nearby community for a safer exploration.

La Gruta has two cave tunnels. The first is shorter and easier, with shallow water flowing through it. The second is more challenging, involving waist-deep water, climbing rocks, and squeezing through narrow passages. Be prepared to encounter bats, cave crickets, and whip scorpions along the way.

Plastic Bottle Village (Castillo Inspiración)

Along the main road back to Bocas Town, stop by the Plastic Bottle Village, an intriguing castle-like structure built from plastic bottles. It serves as a poignant reminder of environmental pollution. Explore its interior, which includes artwork highlighting ecological concerns.

Playa Bluff

End the day at Playa Bluff, a serene and picturesque Caribbean beach. While swimming is not advisable due to strong currents, this tranquil spot is perfect for unwinding. Return to Bocas Town via taxi or bus after enjoying the stunning sunset.

Dinner in Bocas Town

Wrap up the day with dinner at El Chitré, a restaurant offering local Panamanian cuisine by the sea.

Day 2: Mainland Bocas

Manatee Spotting at San San Pond Sak

Start early and venture to the mainland for a unique experience in the San San Pond Sak Nature Reserve. Book a guided boat tour in advance with AAMVECONA. Travel from Almirante to Changuinola and then onward to the reserve.

A boat ride along the Rio San San reveals the lush mangrove ecosystem, vibrant birdlife, and a chance to observe manatees in their natural habitat. The tour costs around $60 per person and lasts about four hours.

Ferry to Isla Bastimentos

Dear Lykkers, after returning to Isla Colón, take a ferry to Isla Bastimentos and check into your accommodation. Relax at Red Frog Beach or head to Playa Polo for a serene evening surrounded by tropical beauty.

Day 3: Isla Bastimentos

Playa Larga

Discover the untouched beauty of Playa Larga, a 6-km stretch of secluded beach within Isla Bastimentos National Park. The journey involves a 1.5-hour trek from Red Frog Beach through overgrown trails, where you may spot vibrant Strawberry Poison Dart Frogs.

Wizard Beach

If time and energy permit, continue west to Wizard Beach. The trail from Red Frog Beach leads to this stunning jungle-backed beach. Keep an eye out for sloths in the trees as you approach Old Bank Village.

Old Bank Village

Explore Old Bank Village, a charming settlement with colorful wooden houses, friendly locals, and a relaxed atmosphere. Walk through the historical trail, learn about the area’s heritage, and enjoy the view of Isla Carenero from the western edge of town.
