Goldfish, as vertebrates, have memory. In the 1960s, scientists at the University of Michigan conducted a classic experiment on the memory of goldfish.

Scientists put a goldfish into a long fish tank, and then opened a bright light at one end of the fish tank and shone it into the water.

The goldfish swimming in the water can naturally feel the light, but it does not have much reaction to it. At this moment the bright light in the water has little effect on its survival.

After 20 seconds, the scientists released electricity at the place where the light shone, and the fish felt the electricity and naturally fled quickly.

Scientists follow such an order: first launch the bright light, then launch the electrode and repeat several times. After that, even if the fish just see the bright light, without the discharge behind it, it will instinctively escape. This is enough to show that the goldfish has a memory, otherwise, it would not actively avoid the light. But how long can this memory last?

Scientists did a similar experiment again 1 month later. After turning on the light, the previously trained fish immediately hid. This shows that fish can develop long-term memory, at least not for 7 seconds. What's more, the fish can remember it from the next generation.

Pitcher, an ichthyologist at the University of British Columbia in Canada, had also been doing an experiment.

In his laboratory, goldfish rearing pools were implanted with tubes of two different colors, and the goldfish could only get food if they chose the correct color.

After a period of training, the tubes with the colors were removed. After a year, when the researchers placed the tubes in the pool again, the goldfish immediately chose the tube with the color that allowed them to obtain food.

In short, all the research on goldfish memory shows that goldfish have much more than seven seconds of memory. The claim that goldfish never get bored is also just a myth.
